Mission
To inspire action to explore and protect the ocean. Led by legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, Mission Blue works to unitie a global coalition to inspire an upwelling of public awareness, access and support for a worldwide network of marine protected areas (MPAs) known as Hope Spots.
Summary of org’s work
Mission Blue’s global network of MPAs—Hope Spots—are scientifically identified areas critical to ocean health, championed by local conservationists and supported through research, storytelling, and advocacy. These special places—rich in biodiversity, cultural value, or restoration potential—can be newly proposed sites or existing marine protected areas needing stronger safeguards. Anyone can nominate a Hope Spot, helping build a global movement to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030 and inspire action leaders can’t ignore.
Location of work
Mission Blue has launched Hope Spots in 164 locations across 115 countries with 16 in the High Seas—covering an estimated 57.6 million km² of ocean. See a map of Hope Spots here.
