Mission

37% of all shark and ray species are threatened with extinction, and scientists estimate that more than 100 million sharks are killed each year. The mission of SCF is to halt the overexploitation of the world’s sharks and rays, prevent extinctions, reverse declines, and restore populations.

Summary of org’s work

The Shark Conservation Fund (SCF) drives global shark and ray protection through a strategic, comprehensive approach focused on research, regulation, and enforcement. Its three core goals are:

Protecting critical habitats by securing at least 50 key shark areas within new or strengthened marine protected zones.
SCF aims to create systemic, lasting change to restore shark populations and strengthen ocean health.

Reforming fisheries management by implementing 60 science-based measures to reduce shark mortality from trade-driven overfishing;

Preventing extinctions of at least 65 threatened shark species not primarily impacted by trade;

Location of work

SCF believes in the need for globally coordinated conservation strategies to effectively tackle the current crisis and affect real change in protecting shark and ray populations. They work globally at local, national, and international levels, investing strategically in projects that can turn the tide for imperiled sharks and rays around the world.
